Electronics & Communication Engineering

Electronics is one of the very common and vital fields holding a significant role in our daily life. Electronic products that we use from early morning to late night are the products of innovative mind of electronics engineers. The study consists of gaining knowledge regarding use of gases, semi conductors, flow of electricity, conducting and non-conducting materials.

Electronics is integrated with communications in severasectors. The most common example of this is the telephone. Telecommu-nication technology has developed at a very rapid pace like radio waves, microwaves, wireless technology, and many more. Internet is the best and most example of this sector we see in day today life.

Electronics & Communications Enginee-ring is one of the largest and fastest growing fields of engineering. It covers a wide range of applications which make our life easier and enjoyable such as television, radio, computers, telecommunication. They help us to see, hear and communicate over vast distances and do things faster. Electronics has a major role in improving productivity in industries like oil, energy, agriculture and so many other important sectors of economy. It is electronic devices that direct, controand test production processes in steel, petroleum and chemicaindustries. Healthcare industry depends on electronic instruments to perform chemicatests and to check body functions. Elec-tronics play a pivotarole for safety in transportation, factories & mines and homes.

An electronics engineer must find new solutions to the practicaproblems affecting our daily lives. An electronics engineer wilwork in tandem with other specialists to design, fabricate, produce, test and supervise the manufacture of complex products and systems such as electronic equipment and components for a variety of industries including hospitals, computer industry, electronic data processing systems for communication and defense etc. They supervise production and manufacturing processes and oversee installation and maintenance. Electronics engineers work with devices that use extremely smalquantity of power. They work with microprocessors, fibre optics, and in telecommunication, television, radio etc.

Electronics engineering is a constantly changing and widening branch of the engineering profession. Electronics industry being a labour intensive industry provides many job opportunities for skilled job seekers. Increased production and demand by government and enterprizes for communication equipment, computers and military electronics along with consumer demand and increased research and development on robots and other types of automation contributes to the growth of employment opportunities in the field. Candidates having a creative and inventive mind and also are good at physics and mathematics wilprobably find electronics engineering a challenging and lucrative career.

What does an Electronics and Communication Engineer do?

  • Electronics and Communication Engineering branch deals with analog transmission, digitatransmission, reception of video, voice and data, basic electronics, solid state devices, microprocessors, digitaand analog communication, analog integrated circuits, satellite communication, microwave engineering, antennae and wave progression.
  • It also deals with the manufacturing of electronic devices, circuits, and communications equipment like transmitter, receiver, integrated circuits, microwaves, and fiber among others.
  • It aims to deepen the knowledge and skills of the students on the basic concepts and theories that wilequip them in their professionawork involving analysis, systems implementation, operation, production, and maintenance of the various applications in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering.
Career Options:
As an Electronic Engineer, entry for junior posts in the Government departments is by direct recruitment through advertisements in newspapers. Selection to Gazetted posts is through the competitive examinations conducted by Union and State Public Service Commission. UPSC conducts an Engine-ering Service Examination (Telecommu-nication and Electronics Engineering group) annually for vacancies in CentraEngineering Services and various State Public Service commissions conduct their own competitive Exams for vacancies in State engineering services.

In the Defence Services, young engineers start as Second Lieutenants. For selection into the Defence Services- Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, applications are invited through Nationadailies and Employment News.

Similarly vacancies in the private and public sector are advertised through leading daily newspapers of the country and the Employment News. Mostly the candidates are interviewed after thorough scrutiny of their basic inputs and the selections are made on merit. CentraElectronics Ltd., Indian Railways, Atomic Energy Commission, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Ministry of CiviAviation, Directorate GeneraPosts and Telegraphs Departments etc are some of the prospective employers in the field.

Electronic Engineers can start their own business by manufacture electronic parts, goods and components. He can also start a repair or assembly shop for television receivers, amplifiers, recording equipment etc. Since electronics is a labour intensive and talent -oriented field, it gives high returns for a given initiainvestment. Loan facilities are offered by banks and SmalScale Industries Development Corporations for starting a business.

These engineers get job in centragovernment, state governments and their sponsored corporations in public sector and in alwings of armed forces and also the private organizations. e.g. :
  • Indian Engineering Service (IES),
  • Indian Telephone Industries, BSNL/ MTNL,
  • Semiconductor, Chip Design-Industries (Motorola , IBM, HP, STM, Philips etc),
  • Indian OiCorporation Ltd. (HPC/ BPC/ IPCL),
  • Oiand NaturaGas Corporation Limited (ONGC),
  • CiviAviation Department;
  • SteeAuthority of Indian Limited (SAIL),
  • Power Sector (NTPC / NHPC Ltd.),
  • Bharat Electronics Limited,
  • Indian Railways,
  • Indus tan Aeronautics Limited (ISRO),
  • Software Industries (ALMNC\'S) (HAL),
  • They are also absorbed into the entertainment, consumer electronics, consumer durables, transmission industry, research establishments, and specialized defense products like signaling equipments, radar controequipments.
  • Also biggest employment opportunities for EC Engineer are in the new computer related fields related to hardware & components and Networking and in the Telecom Sector. There are high end opportunities as welas middle segment opportunities.
  • Earnings of an electronic engineer vary with market demand and among organisations. Working experience, qualifications, ability are important factors in determining the pay level. In India, a bachelor\'s degree candidate in electronics engineering can receive a starting salary of Rs.7500 up to Rs 15,000 approximately with 1-2 years
  • In fact India has emerged as a world class VLSI / Embedded System/digitasignaprocessing design Center & EC engineers of high caliber can find jobs with entry levepackages of Rs. 4.5 l.p.a. to Rs. 6.5 l.p.a. (with added specialization) with severaMNCs operating in India. Similarly mobile computing, hardware & mobile networking, etc. are other lucrative and high growth areas.
Who can take the course?
  • Strong knowledge of physics and mathematics
  • Good affinity towards technology and electronics.
  • A genuine ability and liking to program
  • Hard working
  • If you are innovative and come up with unique solution for even a simple problem.
  • If you have a strong wilpower and a "never say die" attitude to meet deadlines.
  • Need to be a constant learner as this field is ever evolving.
