IIT’s: MADRAS & KHARAGPUR are offering direct admissions based on GATE score. (Normally they ask you to give 8 to 10 preferences of specialisations.)
IITs, KANPUR, MUMBAI, ROORKEE, GAUHATI & IISc BANGALORE are giving admissions for some specialisation based on the GATE score directly and some specialisations based on GATE Score + TEST + INTERVIEW. So candidates are advised to opt for first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE score (last year admissions GATE SCORE and specialisations will be given in the brochure or website, generally). IIT, DELHI is giving admissions based on GATE Score + INTERVIEW. In general candidates are called for interview by considering their first preference, so care to be taken while opting for the first preference appropriate to their GATE score. For IIT’S and IISc, the candidates are advised to apply in the following way:All candidates with 99 percentile and above can apply for M.Tech in Design or Manufacturing as first and second priorities based on their interest. The third option is Industrial Engineering All the above 98 percentile candidates can apply for industrial, thermal and applied mechanics etc. Above 96&97 percentile candidates can apply to Applied Mechanics, Composites, Aerospace Engineering. But 97&98 percentile candidates can apply for MS also for good specializations. All above 90 percentile candidates can apply for MS In IIT MUMBAI the order of priorities for ASSISTANTSHIP may be given as follows.1. Teaching assistantship 2. Research assistantship 3. Teaching assistantship with project 4. Research assistantship with project. And Order of priorities are:Order of priorities in IIT Madras 1. Design sciences & manufacturing sciences (based on your interest) 2. Design sciences & manufacturing sciences (based on your interest) 3. Industrial management ( Humanities department) 4. Thermal sciences 5. Composites 6. Aerospace engineering 7. Ocean engineering 8. Metallurgical sciences 9. Any other specialization of your interest But 97&98 percentile candidates can apply for MS also for good specialization All above 90 percentile candidates can apply for MS The same way for other IIT’s also you can apply. M.S PROGRAMME: It is equivalent to M.Tech. Admissions are given twice in a year in (JUNE & NOVEMBER) and all IIT’s have M.S programme, here the admission is based Gate score + interview + B.Tech marks. Generally minimum period is two years but it depends on candidate’s hard work. If the guide is satisfied with the work then he will recommend for awarding MS, if not it may take more time. In general the average time period will be 2½ to 3 years. Candidates who have percentile above 90 with B.Tech percentage above 70%. have chances to get this programme. For MS in all IIT’s, the candidates will be called for interview based on GATE score + degree marks ( general method ), but some times they may call based on GATE score itself. PSG college of Engineering Coimbatore: It is a good institute and placement is almost equal to IIT’s. Selection is based on GATE+ Tamilnadu PG test. First the candidate has to appear for Tamilnadu PG test. Candidates have to apply separately for each department. NIFFT, Ranchi: Here there are only two specializations, Foundry and manufacturing Engineering Placement is good but in the hardware side only. Admissions are purely based on GATE percentile. 100% placement. BITS, Pilani: It is also a good institute and is generally next to IIT’s. Almost 100% placement is available. Admissions are based on GATE score. + Test for 100 one mark questions (sometimes interview also conducted after the test) NIT, Trichy:This is the top most NIT out of all NIT’s. Here welding technology will be given first preference because, it has very good placement. Admissions are based on Gate score + written test + interview. Here if you complete welding technology specialization you will definitely get job in Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels ltd, Visakapatnam but design, manufacturing and other specialisations are also excellent. THAPAR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY – PATIALA: Admissions here are based on GATE + interview. BHU (Banaras Hindu University): Good institute, placement is available and admissions are based on Gate score + test. Here manufacturing is very nice. CIT, Coimbatore: It is also very good institute with placements and admissions are based on GATE score + Tamilnadu PG test. NIT Calicut: Good placement and admissions are based on GATE score only. VJTI, Bombay: A very good institute and with 100% placement. But it has only two specializations, automobile Engineering and Design. Admissions are based on GATE score only. ISI KOLKATA: Offers M.Tech programme in Computer Science and Quality Control & Operation Research. It is on par with IITs. NIT Suratkal and Warangal: Admissions are based on GATE score only. . Delhi College of Engineering: Prominent institute with placements and admissions are based on GATE score only. B.E College Sibpur, Kolkata: Admissions to the course is based on GATE score only. The next category of Colleges are, NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Alahabad, NIT Baroda, NIT Durgapur, Jodhpur University, Jayachama Rajendra College of Engineering ( JCRCE) Mysore, University College of Engineering Mysore, NIT Nagpur, NIT Indore etc. The next category of colleges are, S.V. University College of Engineering, JNTU, Andhra University College of Engineering. Notifications of these institutes may come in the local dailies. Private engineering colleges of AP like CBIT, Vasavi, GPREC, RGIT etc. also a good option for M.Tech. Preferences: Generally Design and manufacturing are treated as equally preferred specializations. Next comes out to be industrial management or industrial Engineering, next preference goes to the thermal, next is Composites, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, etc. ABOVE 99 PERCENTILE: You have to apply for all IIT’s and IISc with their interested specializations. If you are between 99 and 99.5 and require design or manufacturing specialization, you have to apply PSG, NIT’s or apply non-stipend (self financing) in IIT’s. etc. BETWEEN 98 & 99 percentiles: You have to apply for all IIT’s and IISc, You will definitely get seat in IIT’s but not in design or manufacturing. You have chances to get design or Mfg. If you apply in non-stipend category. BETWEEN 97 & 98 percentiles: You have to apply for all IIT’s and IISc, PSG Coimbatore, NITIE, NIFFT, for M.Tech, all IIT’s for M.S Programme. You will definitely get seat in IIT’s but not design or manufacturing or thermal but it may be ocean engg, aerospace engg, etc. In the non-stipend category you have chances to get design or Mfg. There is also a chance to get M.S Programme in IIT’s with stipend. BETWEEN 95 & 97: You can apply for all IIT’s for M.Tech with specializations of Ocean Engg, Aerospace Engineering and Maintenance Engineering etc type of least preferred ones with stipend and non stipend. You can also apply for IIT’s for M.S Programme. In addition to this you also have to apply for PSG, CIT, NIFFT, VJTI, NITIE, NIT Trichy, NIT Calicutt, BITS, BHU, NIT Suratkal, HBIT and Kanpur. Etc. BETWEEN 90 & 95: Can apply for M.S Programme in IIT’s . If Candidates has good percentage in B.Tech and if they perform well in the interview they have chances to get a seat. You also have to apply for PSG,CIT,NIFFT,VJTI, NITIE, NIT Trichy, NIT Calicutt, BITS, BHU, NIT Suratkal, NIT-Warangal , NIT Bhopal, NIT Durgapur,all other NIT’s, Karnataka &Tamilnadu Engineering Colleges , SVUCE, JNTU, OUCE, AUCE, etc. BELOW 90 percentiles: You have chances to get seat in NIT Allahabad, NIT Bhopal, University Engineering Colleges like SVUCE, JNTU, OUCE, AUCE, Karnataka and Tamilnadu Engineering colleges (Govt. & Private) , Jodhpur University etc. Recently in AP also many Engineering colleges has started M.Tech programs and they are also giving stipend. All below 90 will definitely get seat in these colleges. Special attention for SC/ST students: We strongly suggest you to apply for premier institutes like IIT’s irrespective of your percentiles. Luck may favor you. Special attention for Girls: Certain universities have girls reservation, eg. Andhra Pradesh. Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances. Special note for Second Class students: If you see the rules & regulations of various premier Institutes, 1st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite. If you apply online, your application will be rejected. Hence we suggest you to apply manually with a request letter stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE Score and your desire to do M.Tech in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Most of the professors would like to encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of the above negative point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. Engineering Services Exam 2013: Preparation Plan and Question Paper Analysis
Union Public Service Commission will be holding the Engineering Service Examination 2013 to fill up the GROUP A category posts like Assistant Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers in different departments at national level. There is an ample scope to reach the highest position with promotions in these departments.

The Engineering services examination is conducted in the specializations of • Electronics and Telecommunication,
• Electrical and Electronics Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Civil Engineering Selected candidates are posted in the Department of Railways, Central water, Central Engineering, Military Engineering, Department of Telecom, Indian Ordnance Factories, Geological Survey of India and many others. Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics & Communications, Civil, Mechanical) or equivalent degree from recognized universities. Students of final year Engineering or equivalent degree are also eligible. M.Sc degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject is also acceptable for certain posts. Age Limit: Not less than 21 years and not more than 30 years (upper age limit is relaxable for SCs/ STs, OBCs and certain others). Exam Procedure:
Candidates are tested in two phases
• General Ability Test 120 QuestionsI. Written test (1000 marks) Paper - I (Objective): • Part - A General English (100 Marks) • Part - B General Studies (100 Marks) • Total 200 Marks Paper II & III (Objective): • Electronics & Communication or Electrical or Mechanical or Civil Engineering. • Every paper contains 120 questions having 200 marks. Paper IV and V (Conventional papers): • In any one of the above mentioned Engineering specialization. • Each paper is of 200 marks. 2. Personality Test (Interview) - 200 Marks Paper - I (General ability test analysis): This paper is for 200 marks. Allotted time is two hours. In part A of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidate’s basic ability in English language. Usually candidates are supposed to answer questions on Synonyms, Antonyms, Articles, Prepositions, Spotting errors Comprehension Passages etc. Candidates whose background are from vernacular medium up to intermediate and are from rural areas have to pay enough attention on this section. Current Affairs a Lion's share: In Part B of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidate’s general ability on Indian history, Geography, Indian Politics, Science& Technology, Public Administration, Current Affairs etc. The questions on Current Affairs will have a lion’s share. Questions on Census, Corporate Governance, Election Commission, World Bank, Terrorism, recent Environmental Summit, and formation of new States, Sports awards and other latest events are likely to be asked. Questions under Science and Technology may be on Diseases, Vaccines, Agriculture, Space research are also important. Last ten years previous papers: Previous papers for the last ten years can give you an insight into the nature of questions. Solving old papers can really be helpful for the preparation of this exam. Reading News papers like The Hindu, Times of India every day and making notes on important events and news can be handy to tackle this section. Candidates should focus on the news from Jan.- 2009 to April 2010 period. Paper II & III (Objective): These two papers are related to Engineering subjects. Every question paper carries 200 marks for 120 questions. Time allotted is two hours. It means every objective question is to be answered in an average time of one minute. Hence, speed and accuracy is very important in these two papers. Calculators are not allowed in the examination centers. So there will not be complicated numerical questions. The problems can be solved by hand with little bit of mathematical IQ. The trend of questions will be as follows: • Primary and basic concepts - 40% • Application oriented - 40% • Formulae, facts and figures - 15% • Assertion & Reasoning - 5% Candidates reasoning ability and in-depth knowledge of his subject are tested through matching questions, picking up correct and incorrect statements etc. Be aware of Negative Marks:Every wrong answer costs you 1/3 of the marks allotted to each question. Every objective question paper contains 200 marks for 120 questions. It means every question caries 5/3 marks. Every wrong answer is considered to cut 1/3 of allotted marks. Candidates can answer certain questions by using process of elimination. If candidates don't get any clue to answer a particular question, it is better to avoid answering such question. Paper IV & V: These two papers are completely conventional and calculators are permitted. Generally every paper contains seven to eight questions. Out of them candidates are supposed to answer five to six questions. The number of questions to be answered varies depending on the Engineering discipline. In certain conventional papers question 'one' is compulsory with higher weightage. Hence, Candidates should read the instructions carefully. Questions are generally based on Theoretical concepts and Derivations. Minimum Qualifying Marks: The commission has discretion to set minimum qualifying marks for one or all papers. So it is advised to pay equal attention to all the papers. Many students try to ignore general ability paper. This is not the correct way. Especially candidates from rural background should be more careful in this regard. Be aware that the conventional papers will be evaluated only if certain minimum marks are obtained in objective papers I, II & III.
Advantages of serious preparation:
If a candidate prepares seriously at least once for Engineering Services Examination, there is every guarantee that he/she will be certainly successful in any other Engineering Competitive Examination in India. A salary of Rs. 35000/- per month is guaranteed in the very first month. A candidate who joins these services at the age of 21 or 22 will reach the top most position of that department. The job security is an added attraction in Central Government postings. Personal Test (Interview)
Mode of preparation:
Candidates are advised to study standard books written by internationally renowned writers. It is also advantageous to go through text books followed in IIT's. Candidates can understand different ways of questions by practicing previous papers. In addition to that they are also advised to practice other question papers of Civil Services, Forest Services etc., which are conducted by UPSC relevant to the syllabus. Practicing GATE papers conducted by IIT boosts the candidates self confidence. By doing so the candidates can understand the number of ways in which questions can be asked. If candidates gradually improve their subject knowledge and analyze questions that are expected in the exams undoubtedly they come out with flying colors in the exam. 4 ½ months for Preparation: Candidates have almost 4 ½ months to give Engineering Services - 2013. If they start their preparation immediately nothing can stop them from reaching their goal. They need to have a proper planning. Every day 1 hour should be given to the preparation for General Ability. Every Engineering subject contains some simple topics. At the same time every subject has some complicated topics. Every person has a unique life style. Interestingly depending on his life style he possesses higher energy and lower energy levels at different times of the day. Candidates should plan their study hours in such a way that they should study difficult and complicated topics when they have higher energy levels. Candidates should get involved in subject discussions with their friends. They are also advised to take help from their seniors and professors to clear their doubts. Effective Revision is the key factor: Candidates should revise their subjects every week and every month. It is of course important that how much syllabus a candidate studies but it is more important that how many times one properly revises and studies the syllabus. Time management is an important factor in attempting ES exam. If candidates practice time-taking derivations and numerical problems before hand and become well versed with them they can save a lot of time in the examination hall. While practicing model papers, candidates should maintain timings. With this kind of practice, they can get rid of examination fear. |

Introduction
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It is also referred to as the ‘mother’ branch of engineering. Another appealing feature of mechanical engineering is that the application base of this field of study is extremely broad and diverse. Almost all inventions during the ancient period and a vast majority in the modern era are direct contributions of one or the other application of mechanics.
Traditionally, mechanical engineers have to deal with concepts such as mechanics, thermodynamics, robotics, kinematics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics and many others. These concepts are applied in the process of designing state-of-the-art manufacturing units, different types of motor vehicles, aircraft and aerospace parts and a vast assortment of industrial machinery. Mechanical engineers also contribute in the development of various engines, power plant equipment, heating and cooling systems and other simple and complex machinery. Mechanical engineers not only design new mechanical systems but they are also responsible for testing, maintaining and manufacturing them.
The aforementioned are the conventional roles and responsibilities of mechanical engineers. However, times have changed. Nowadays the scope of mechanical engineering is expanding beyond its traditional boundaries. Mechanical engineers are focussing their attention towards new areas of research such as nanotechnology, development of composite materials, biomedical applications, environmental conservation, etc.
The ever increasing scope of this particular job profile now requires professionals to get into financial and marketing aspects of product development and even into people and resource management. All in all mechanical engineering offers a wide bouquet of job options to students who are looking for a stable and stimulating career.
Step-by-Step
Passing 10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) is the first step you take towards becoming a professional mechanical engineer. To be eligible for a graduate programme (BE/BTech) in a college, you should have scored at least 50% marks and 60% for being eligible for IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) in 10+2 with PCM as subjects. After this, you can sit for various entrance examinations such as:
• The Joint Entrance Examination for IITs (IITJEE) for admission to various IITs
• All-India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) for admission to various National Institutes of Technology or regional engineering colleges
Apart from these, there are hundreds of engineering colleges across the length and breadth of the country where you can get into a graduate programme in mechanical engineering. Some of these colleges conduct their own entrance exams whereas some accept AIEEE scores.
You can also opt for a diploma in engineering from a polytechnic. For obtaining a diploma, the basic eligibility is completion of Class 10 with 50% marks. The duration of these diploma courses is three-years for regular and four-years for part-time study.
You can also go for an associate membership qualification from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, which is considered at par with the diploma earned from a state run polytechnic or a university degree. Another option is to earn a similar qualification offered by the Institution of Engineering (India). Diploma holders can also get direct entry into the second year of a graduate program (lateral entry).
After successful completion of the graduate program, you can go for the two-year masters program in mechanical engineering or ME/MTech. If you are interested in pursuing a post-graduate programme in mechanical engineering from any of the IITs, then you must appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers (GATE).
These days many engineering colleges are offering a dual (BE/BTech and ME/MTech) programmes. Some other institutions are offering a combination of an engineering degree along with a management programme.
In case you are interested in further studies, you can go do a PhD or even opt for a management degree from a reputed business school.
Start Early
To make mechanical engineering your chosen career path, you must have affinity for the way different machines function. A graduate programme from a private engineering institution will cost you anywhere between Rs.50,000 to Rs.2,00,000 annually. However, in a reputed government run establishment such as the Indian institute of Technology (IIT) or any regional engineering college, you will have to pay an annual fees in the range of anywhere between Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000.
Funding/Scholarship
Educational institutes offering programmes in mechanical engineering generally extend scholarships to students from socially and economically backward classes. For example, IITs waive off the complete tuition fees for students belonging to the socially backward communities. Scholarships, freeships, stipends and financial assistance are also provided to students on the basis of merit and other qualifying criteria.
Job Prospect
Since mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering fields, the job prospects on offer for skilled mechanical engineers are aplenty and unending.
